COLUMBIA — New guard cable will be installed in the median of U.S. 63 from Jefferson City to Interstate 70 this spring and summer.
APAC-Missouri will install the cable at a cost of $2.4 million, according to a news release from the Missouri Department of Transportation. The work also will include guard rails on some bridges.
The guard cable is intended to reduce the potential for cross-over crashes. The cables have been quite successful, the highway department stated in a news release. More than 600 miles of cable have been installed on state highways since 2002. A state study on Interstate 70 showed the cable stopped vehicles from entering opposing lanes of traffic 98 percent of the time.
