COLUMBIA — Supporters of the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act need 130,000 petition signatures to get legislation on the November ballot that will tighten the standards for puppy mill operation.

There will be a "puppy love" themed meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Columbia Public Library in the Friends Room where residents can learn more about the proposed legislation, sign the petition and find volunteer information.

The main speakers will be Columbia Second Chance and the Central Missouri Humane Society. Other speakers include mayoral candidate Sid Sullivan, candidate for Boone County presiding commissioner J. Scott Christianson and Eduardo Crespi, director of Centro Latino. Musician Sutu Forte will perform.
