In the wake of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili’s death on Friday, there have been numerous questions raised about the safety of athletes at the Winter Olympic Games.
Kumaritashvili, 21, lost control and crashed into an unpadded steel pillar at 90 mph during his final practice run before Saturday’s competition. Medics on the scene tried giving him CPR before he was airlifted to a local hospital, but Kumaritashvili could not be revived. His shocking death hours before the Opening Ceremonies has reignited the debate over what the boundaries should be for speed and extreme sports.
According to a story in the Washington Post, more than a dozen skiers, snowboarders and bobsledders have died after accidents on courses. The investigation conducted by the International Luge Federation and Vancouver Olympic officials revealed that Kumaritashvili’s crash was not caused by deficiencies in the track and was the result of human error, officials said.
Despite the debate, the fact that a young athlete lost his life cannot be overlooked.
Do you think the Winter Olympic Games should have more restrictions put in place to protect the safety of its athletes? If so, what should the restrictions be?
