COLUMBIA — Peter Stiepleman, principal of West Boulevard Elementary School, will oversee public elementary education in Columbia starting July 1.
The current assistant superintendent, Jack Jensen, retires June 30.
Stiepleman also accepted MU's Martin Luther King Jr. Award for 2010, on behalf of the school, at a ceremony last month, as well as at a meeting last week of the Columbia School Board.
West Boulevard Elementary received the award as a part of the Chancellor's Diversity Initiative program. The award is given to schools that demonstrate King's community involvement.
Noor Azizan-Gardner, director of diversity programming and professional development at MU, said the school was chosen because of its work closing academic achievement gaps among students.
