Bolivar boy sets first fishing record of the season

JEFFERSON CITY — A fifteen-year-old Bolivar boy is the first Missourian to set a state fishing record this season. He used an alternative fishing method to do so.

Joshua Lee Vance caught the 4-pound 5-ounce white sucker fish by gigging, which is spearing a fish on a long pole.

The record is one of many state fishing records that are still open.

The Missouri Department of Conservation tracks two kinds of fishing records. Pole and line records are for fish hooked in the mouth with a hand held line. Alternative methods records are made by gigging, archery or snagging.

The fish was over 21 inches long.
