BENTON — Former Missouri House Speaker Rod Jetton faces a preliminary hearing on charges of assaulting a woman.

The proceeding was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in southeast Missouri's Scott County.

The former Republican lawmaker from Marble Hill is accused of assaulting a woman last November during rough sex at her home in Sikeston.

Police reports offer conflicting statements about whether the sex was consensual. The woman claimed Jetton struck her in the face and choked her.

Jetton has denied wrongdoing.

Jetton served the maximum eight years in the House allowed by term limits. He was speaker from 2005 until leaving the House in 2008. He shut down his political consulting business after his arrest.
