COLUMBIA — Six additional police officers will be patrolling the streets until 9 p.m. Thursday.
The Columbia Police Department announced the extra enforcement in a news release Tuesday. The additional officers are joining the department's Traffic Unit to ticket for various traffic violations, including:
- Red light violations
- Stop sign violations
- Speeding
- Following another vehicle too closely
- Seat belt violations
The extra enforcement is grant-funded and is a part of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign to reduce safety belt violations and highway fatalities.

I don't care much for the title. It implies people should only drive carefully on Thursday because of the increased enforcement.
Bill Smith,
Just to explain ourselves, I wrote that headline because we first reported on the increased enforcement on Tuesday. This isn't quite an update because there's no new information — It's just the kind of information that's more useful today than it was two days ago.
We certainly don't mean to imply that drivers shouldn't follow the rules on other days.
