COLUMBIA — A second-grade male student of Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary School, 5801 Arbor Pointe Parkway, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Principal Daniel Boatman and damaging school property around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to an e-mail from Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Jessie Haden.
The juvenile suspect supposedly assaulted the principal when he tried to confine the suspect to a room apart from other students after the suspect was uncooperative and disruptive. A two-foot strip of wall trim was damaged during the assault, Boatman said.
Because the parent of the suspect initially refused to offer the child’s basic information to the police, the suspect was transported to the Columbia Police Department and later released to the mother, Haden said in the e-mail.
Boatman said he was not willing to comment further because the case is an open investigation.
