COLUMBIA — The 23-year-old woman hit by a car shortly after 1 a.m. Friday is still listed in serious condition by University Hospital as of Saturday afternoon.
A southbound 2007 Mercury Milan struck the eastbound pedestrian, Dina Mcpherson, on Providence Road approximately 50 feet south of Stewart Road, said officer Jessie Haden, spokeswoman for the Columbia Police Department.
Mcpherson sustained skull and spinal fractures from the collision and was taken to University Hospital.
The Milan was stopped at a red light and continued south on Providence Road when the light turned green, Haden said. A witness reported that the car did brake before hitting the pedestrian, whose body struck the car's hood and windshield. Jacob Schneider, 19, was driving the car. There were two 21-year-old passengers.
"All were wearing seat belts," Haden said. "This probably contributed to them not being injured."
Police said that at this time it seems that Schneider was not at fault or that he could not have done anything to avoid the crash.
