PrintCOLUMBIA — Shattered glass left spirits scratched but solid after an attempted break-in at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop on East Walnut Street Monday morning.
Between 2 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday an unknown person or persons picked up a brick and smashed it several times against a pane of security glass near the main door to the Salvation Army Thrift Shop. The suspect left after loosening a few shards of glass.
To make a donation to the Salvation Army call 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825) to have your items picked up from your home, or drop off items at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop located at 23 East Walnut St.
“We’ve got Brady’s Glass looking at it this afternoon, I’m expecting it will cost two or three hundred dollars,” Robert Wells, Thrift Shop manager, said.
Nothing was taken from the store, which is fortunate since stock is running low.
“Even right now our thrift store donations are down. For this sort of thing to happen during a very low period of donations is hurtful, harmful and discouraging,” Maj. K. Kendall Mathews, Salvation Army regional coordinator, said.
Mathews said he is hoping that something positive will come out of this act of vandalism.
“We’re asking the community to keep their eyes open and their ears close to the ground because this sort of unlawful activity could spread to the local businesses downtown,” Mathews said. “We really need donations of furniture, household items and clothing.
At this time no suspects have been found. The store does have surveillance cameras but none covering the area of the attempted break-in. The Salvation Army is planning to add another camera to the area where the window was broken.
“We don’t want people to feel afraid to shop in our stores because of this. We still have faith in this community and faith in God.”

That is so sad that someone would try to break into the Salvation Army. They are there to provide for the less fortunate. What a jerk, whomever you are, you should feel ashamed of yourself!
