COLUMBIA — Traffic on U.S. 63 may face a slow down if City Council gets its way.
Council voted 6-0, without the presence of the Mayor, Monday night to ask the Missouri Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit from 70 mph to 60 mph on U.S. 63 within city limits.
"This is a matter of safety," Sixth Ward Councilwoman Barbara Hoppe said. "We received concerns from people about the safety of being able to get on and off of the ramps."
The goal is to reduce the number of accidents in the area and decrease the seriousness of the accidents that do occur.
"Studies show that lower speeds result in less accidents as people have more reaction time," Hoppe said.
MoDOT has to approve the resolution for it to take effect.
"It is the council's goal and aim to make this happen, one way or another. This is another step toward yes, I won't be looking at this as a step toward no," Hoppe said. "The speed limit on I-70 when entering Columbia is 60; it just makes sense."
