MONTAUK STATE PARK — Freezing temperatures didn't deter thousands of people from casting a line on the opening day of Missouri's trout season.

Gov. Jay Nixon fired the starting gun for fishing at 6:30 a.m. today at Montauk State Park. Then Nixon joined the fishermen and caught a trout on a fly line.

Montauk hatchery manager Tom Whelan said about 1,900 people showed up for the opening morning of trout season. By 9 a.m., the largest fish caught at the park weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces.

Montauk park in south-central Missouri is one of several popular trout fishing spots in the state.
