PrintThe Rock Bridge girls basketball team beat Jefferson City 34-30 on Wednesday night at Union High School to advance to the quarterfinals of the Class 5 state playoffs.
“We stepped up and hit a few big shots tonight,” Rock Bridge coach Jill Nagel said. “The defense was tough but we worked around it. Megan Marshall hit a 3-pointer with a little over a minute to go.”
Rock Bridge (24-4) will play Kickapoo (22-6) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Rolla with the winner advancing to the state semifinals. The Bruins, the 2008 state champions, lost to Nixa in last season's state quarterfinals.
Marshall's 12 points Wednesday led the Bruins. Hannah Dressler had six points, Amaya Williams scored five and Emily Holt scored four. Carmen Boessen, Allison Marshall and Orreshia Chatman each contributed two points for the Bruins.
Both the Bruins and the Jays played tight defense, and the Jays led just 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, Rock Bridge led 15-13 while both sides scored only five points in the third quarter.
“The defense was tough tonight,” Nagel said. “These are two very good defensive teams. We created lots of turnovers and gave ourselves lots of opportunities on offense to pull away and score.”
Kickapoo advanced with a 56-24 victory Wednesday night against Hillcrest. Kickapoo lost to Rock Bridge 44-38 on Jan. 23 at the Shawnee Mission South tournament.
