PrintThe Missouri baseball team had its chances but couldn’t put up any runs in a 3-0 loss to Houston on Friday at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
The Tigers (4-3) lost their second straight game after having their four-game win streak snapped on Sunday.
Houston scored a run in both the first and second innings before Missouri starter Eric Anderson settled down.
Anderson again looked sharp in his second collegiate start. The freshman hurler went 5 2/3 innings, giving up just two runs, but he couldn’t get the help he needed from the offense, which stranded 11 runners.
The best chance for Missouri came in the fifth inning. The Tigers were trailing 2-0 and had runners on first and second with no outs. Power hitting first baseman Brett Nicholas was asked to sacrifice bunt the runners over.
Nicholas completed the job, bringing up designated hitter Jonah Schmidt and left fielder Aaron Senne with runners on second and third and a chance to tie the game. Schmidt struck out on four pitches, and Senne grounded out on a check swing.
The top and bottom of the lineup did their jobs for the Tigers, but the three, four and five hitters went a combined 0-for-8.
Coach Tim Jamieson said this will have to change if the Tigers want to get back on the winning track.
The Tigers play Texas Christian University in their second game of the Houston College Classic at noon Saturday.
