The Missouri baseball team battled back, but lost 4-3 in extra innings to Texas Christian University on Saturday afternoon in Houston.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers (4-4) got two runners on base with a hit batsmen and a walk. Facing TCU closer Kaleb Merck, Missouri first baseman Aaron Senne doubled to drive in a run. Brett Nicholas pinch-hit for catcher Ryan Ampleman and produced a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
TCU had a good chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, but made two outs on base running mistakes. Missouri also had a rough day on the base paths and had three runners picked off.
In the bottom of the 10th, TCU scored the winning run on a one-out infield single by Aaron Schultz that scored Josh Elander, who had reached base on a leadoff single. Missouri pitcher Jeff Emens took the loss, Missouri's third in a row.
One day after being shutout for the first time this season, the Tigers looked like they were going to rebound with a big offensive day. Houston native Russell LaFleur led off the game with his first career home run. Missouri didn’t score again until the eighth.
Starter Nick Tepesch was a bright spot for Missouri. The struggling pitcher had his best start of the year, going 6 2/3 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) and striking out five.
Missouri will take on Texas in its final game of the Houston College Classic at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
