The state of Texas was not kind to the Missouri baseball team this weekend.
The Tigers lost their final game of the Houston College Classic to Texas by a score of 8-5 on Sunday in Houston. Missouri was the only non-Texas school in the tournament and lost all three of its games this weekend.
Missouri (4-5) has lost four straight overall.
The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead on designated hitter Jonah Schmidt’s second home run of the season in the top of the second inning. Third basemen Brett Nicholas made it 3-0 in the third inning with a 2-out base hit.
Texas scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1. The Longhorns then broke it open in the where with six runs on four hits. Missouri had to use three pitchers in the inning. Zack Hardoin was charged with go-ahead run and took the loss.
The Tigers tried to rally in the eighth inning. Texas closer Chance Ruffin entered the game with two runners on, and walked Schmidt to load the bases. Missouri scored two runs before Ruffin got shortstop Michael Liberto to strike out to end the threat.
Texas added another run in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run by Jordan Etier.
The Tigers are still trying to figure out who their third starter will be. Aaron Blunt got the start today, but was lifted after two innings. Ryan Clubb and Jeff Scardino, the other two leading candidates for the spot, also pitched in relief.
Missouri starts a ten-game home stand against Western Illinois at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Taylor Stadium.
