Nixon appoints Fugit as new Boone County treasurer for 2010

COLUMBIA — Jan Fugit will serve as the Boone County treasurer for the remainder of this year, Gov. Jay Nixon said Monday.

Fugit will be resigning from Boone County Hospital where she is the financial reporting manager to take over the full-time treasurer position.

“I have 20 plus years of accounting experience, and this was an excellent opportunity,” Fugit said. “I’m excited about serving Boone County.”

Fugit is an MU alumna with a degree in accounting. She has worked for the Missouri Department of Higher Education, the Missouri Department of Insurance and the Missouri State Auditor.

Kay Murray officially retired on Feb. 28. Murray’s assistant, Lisa Roland, served as the interim treasurer from March 1 until Nixon appointed a nominee recommended by the Boone County Democrat and Republican central committees.

Fred Seaman, the vice-chair for the Democrat committee, said the law stated that when the existing treasurer resigned, it was up to the governor’s office to appoint a successor.

Nixon asked both committees to submit three names for consideration. Seaman said only two applicants had submitted all of the necessary paperwork. The committee then voted unanimously to advance those two applicants.

Seaman first met Fugit at a meeting where nominees were agreed on.

“She seemed to be a very intelligent, qualified person,” Seaman said.

Fugit will be sworn in within the week. As treasurer, Fugit will be responsible for managing the funds of the county until Dec. 31. In 2011, the newly elected treasurer will fill the position. Fugit has already filed for the office and will be running for the Democratic nomination in the Aug. 3 primary.
