COLUMBIA - The Public Works Department is changing local speed limit street signs to reflect the City Council’s approval to lower speed limits from 30 mph to 25 mph on residential streets, according to a release.
All adjustments to the street limits will be in place by Oct. 1 and the Columbia Police Department will be enforcing the altered speed limits.
The decision to change speed limits was made by the City Council in the fall of 2009 following a hearing on the Investigation of Residential Street Speed Limit Reduction report conducted by MU. Results from the study showed the reduction of speed limits on residential streets to 25 mph was effective in reducing traffic speeds.
The release defines these affected roads as “residential streets with traffic volumes less than 2,000 cars per day.”
Speed limits will also increase on some major roadways, such as Conley Road, from 30 mph to 35 mph.
This project costs $128,000 and will be covered by traffic safety funds.
