PrintApplications to Google for the opportunity to be a trial community for their high-speed network, Google Fiber, are due March 26.
Columbia has gained local support with the help of CoMo Fiber. The flash mob during the Kansas-Missouri game March 6 was deemed successful by flash mob organizers. Game attendees held signs that said "Google" and a quiet "Google" chant could be heard during the beginning of the second half of the game.
- Members of a group trying to attract the attention of Google plan to participate in a flash mob during the Missouri men's basketball game against Kansas at 1 p.m. Saturday. The group, known as CoMo Flash Mob, plans to conduct the event during the first timeout of the second half. A flash mob is when a large group of people quickly organizes some sort of collective activity, such as a dance party or chant. The group met Friday at the Academy of Fine Arts to construct signs for the event. The goal of the flash mob is to help convince Google to bring fiber-optic Internet to Columbia.
This past week, Regional Economic Development Inc. began organizing a group of people to assist in putting together the city's bid.
The City Council will vote on March 15 to decide whether or not the City Manager is authorized to make a formal application.
Other community organizations and businesses have supported the idea as well. Boone Hospital Center said that Google Fiber would be "very beneficial."
If chosen, Columbia would be at the cutting edge of technology. Google says that the project would allow them to offer Internet service at "comparable prices."

I would pirate even more movies and music.
I don't think it will change most peoples internet habits very much.
If I had a gigabit connection, I might download movies rather than renting them, bit it wouldn't change the way I usually use the internet other than that.
Really, a lot of uses for very high speed do have to do with the seamier side of the internet (warez and pr0n). It's none of my business what other people do with their internet connections, but part of me can't help thinking this will just increase the ease with which people can get hacked software, movies, and questionable porn.
