Applications to Google for the opportunity to be a trial community for their high-speed network, Google Fiber, are due March 26.
Columbia has gained local support with the help of CoMo Fiber. The flash mob during the Kansas-Missouri game March 6 was deemed successful by flash mob organizers. Game attendees held signs that said "Google" and a quiet "Google" chant could be heard during the beginning of the second half of the game.
This past week, Regional Economic Development Inc. began organizing a group of people to assist in putting together the city's bid.
The City Council will vote on March 15 to decide whether or not the City Manager is authorized to make a formal application.
Other community organizations and businesses have supported the idea as well. Boone Hospital Center said that Google Fiber would be "very beneficial."
If chosen, Columbia would be at the cutting edge of technology. Google says that the project would allow them to offer Internet service at "comparable prices."
