City Council to vote on funds for Humane Society

COLUMBIA — The Columbia City Council will vote Monday on whether to give $20,000 to the Central Missouri Humane Society.

According to the funding agreement, the money would:

• Allow the society to provide Animal Control with sterilization (spay or neuter) vouchers for 150 dogs and 100 cats. Those vouchers would be distributed to pet owners. The city would allocate $10,000 for the vouchers.
• Improve coordination between Animal Control and the Humane Society. The Human Society is expected to submit reports about redeemed vouchers, provided vaccines, issued licenses and adopted animals on June 30 and Oct. 30. When the city receives these reports, the society would receive another $5,000.
• Vaccinate up to 800 dogs for free.
• Allow the society to act as a licensing service for people who adopt pets from shelters. It would collect the city's animal license tax and give out tags and certificates provided to it by the city.
