PrintCOLUMBIA — The third annual Earth Hour, a joint venture between the city, local businesses and several sustainability partners will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 27. All households and businesses are encouraged to turn off their lights for the hour.
The event was started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, as a symbol of solidarity against climate change.
Jesse Hall's dome and the sign on the Tiger Hotel will go dark for the hour, joining the likes of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Sydney Opera House and the Colosseum in Rome.
"With this, we reduce our carbon footprint and our contribution to global warming," Mayor Darwin Hindman said at a press conference on Monday.
Monta Welch, president of the Columbia Climate Change Coalition, suggested activities for the hour, including candlelit board games and stargazing with neighbors.
A kick off for Earth Hour and the Alternative Transportation Weekend in Columbia will take place at 10 a.m. March 25 in the City Hall lobby.
