PrintCOLUMBIA — A half-mile stretch of West Broadway from McBaine Avenue to West Boulevard has earned state approval for a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
The area, nominated as the West Broadway Historic District, has more than 50 homes, with at least 15 built before 1920. All of the homes were built between 1902 and 1953.

Historic West Broadway neighborhood association includes only the properties addressed off of West Broadway, between Garth and West Boulevard. - A section of Broadway in Columbia has been endorsed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to be included in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has forwarded its decision to the Keeper of the National Register, a staff member of the National Park Service. The state review board is part of the Department of Natural Resources.
According to the recommendation letter, a final decision takes about 45 days.
Aside from prestige, placement on the registry makes property owners eligible for 20 percent tax credits if they spend money to rehabilitate the historic homes. It also would qualify the properties for federal historic preservation grants, though no money for those grants is currently available, and it would require that the impact of any federal projects on the area be considered.
The planned widening of Broadway would not be affected if construction uses no federal funds.
If approved at the national level, the West Broadway Historic District would be the fifth in Columbia. The others are the Downtown, North Ninth Street, Francis Quadrangle and East Campus Historic.
