COLUMBIA — A 14-year-old boy was hit around 8 p.m. Wednesday by a car at the intersection of Stadium Boulevard and Rollins Road, police said. The boy was in stable condition at University Hospital as of Thursday afternoon.

According to an e-mail from Detective Jeff Westbrook of the Columbia Police Department, witnesses saw the boy cross the street with a large group of friends in violation of the traffic signal when a 2001 Buick Park Avenue, which was traveling south, hit him. The boy was thrown over the vehicle and landed a short distance from the site of the impact.

The boy was treated at University Hospital for abrasions and a non-life-threatening fracture to the front of his skull.

The north end of the intersection where the boy and his friends crossed is not equipped with a marked pedestrian crosswalk or pedestrian signal. However, the south side is.

Excessive speed or any sort of impairment on the part of the driver is not thought to be a factor, police said.

“I do not foresee any criminal charges against the driver,” Westbrook wrote in the e-mail. “My guess is the pedestrian will be home by the weekend."
