KANSAS CITY — A national charter school company will pay $570,000 to settle claims of discrimination against two pregnant employees of its schools in Kansas City.
The settlement with Imagine Schools Inc. of Arlington, Va., was announced Thursday by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
The federal agency had filed suit claiming the company discriminated against two pregnant staff members of its charter middle school in Kansas City. The women were not retained when the company closed the middle school and opened the Renaissance Academy middle and high school.
An amendment to the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy.
According to its Web site, Imagine operates 74 public charter schools in 12 states and the District of Columbia, including two in Kansas City and five in St. Louis.
