Clogged sewer line leaks waste into Grindstone Creek tributary

COLUMBIA–  A clogged sewer line caused an overflow of waste water into a Grindstone Creek tributary around 1:45 p.m. Friday.

Untreated water was expelled from a manhole near 2800 Bluff Creek Drive into the tributary Friday afternoon. City officials reported the clog, and it was taken care of within the hour, according to a news release from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The leakage occurred at an unnamed tributary about three-fourths of a mile upstream.

The Columbia/Boone County Health Department was notified and investigated. In cases of sewer overflow, contaminated water could pose a threat to public health and the environment.

To avoid potential harm, the Department of Natural Resources suggests that communities create a system to track where incidents like this occur to keep residents protected and safe.
