PrintCOLUMBIA — The Route 40 Bridge over Interstate 70 near Midway will close because of a bridge deck replacement, according to a release.
Construction will begin the week of April 5, weather permitting. According to a spokesman from Missouri Department of Transportation, the project will cost around $738,000 and will be undertaken by L. Krupp Construction Inc. The project is scheduled to last through early May.
- While the Missouri Department of Transportation works on the bridge at the Midway Exit, commuters will not be able to cross.
The on- and off-ramps to I-70 will be open throughout the construction, though cars coming down Route 40 will need to take detours to cross the Interstate, Charles Sullivan, resident engineer with MoDOT out of Columbia, said.
“The bridges are inspected every year or two,” Sullivan said. “Once they get to a certain point, they get replaced. And this one needs to be.”
The construction affects drivers on Route 40 trying to cross I-70. Jo Britt-Rankin, associate dean, College of Human Environmental Sciences, MU Extension, lives in the area and crosses this bridge to get to work every day. The construction will make her commute longer.
“It’ll be 10 to 15 miles out of my way, or to go through the country would take about 20 minutes,” she said. “I am going to have to plan ahead and think about leaving earlier and think about my kids who are driving in to school. They will have to make sure they plan ahead.”
Although she said she was not annoyed by the construction, she added, “There will probably be a few times I forget and am frustrated that I have to turn back.” She said she just hopes construction is done as soon as possible.
