Humane Society rescues 55 dogs at Missouri property

ST. LOUIS — Officials from the Humane Society of Missouri and the Stone County Sheriff's Department have rescued 55 dogs from what they call deplorable living conditions at a property near Hurley.

The animals included 40 dachshunds, several Boston terriers and other dogs. Also, 12 dead adult dogs and newborn puppies were found discarded in a rubber container behind the home.

Authorities say five dogs were found in stacked wire crates in the kitchen. Others were outside, covered in mud, in dirt-bottom pens. Most reportedly had no access to food.

The rescued dogs were taken to the Humane Society headquarters in St. Louis. A disposition hearing is scheduled for March 31 in Galena.

No charges have been filed against the owner.
