PrintThe Columbia School Board takes the educational "pulse" of their community through public meetings and conversation with the public. Their duties are selection and hiring of a school superintendent. The board is responsible for approving a balanced district budget. The board also approves and adopts district curriculum. Board members work with the superintendent to implement board policies and plans.
The elections for the Columbia School Board will take place April 6th. The public can vote for two of three candidates running for a three-year term: Jan Mees, Jim Whitt and Dan Holt, and one of two candidates running for a one-year term: Phil Peters and Jonathan Sessions.
Ordinarily, School Board candidates run for three-year terms, but when former member Rosie Tippin resigned last May, Jim Whitt took her place by appointment for one year. The public has the right to elect the person they would like to see finish the last year of Tippin’s original three-year term. Barring any other extenuating circumstances, the board will resume its three-year term length after this election.
