AmerenUE says Taum Sauk reservoir rebuild on schedule

LESTERVILLE — The St. Louis-based utility company AmerenUE says the rebuilding of its Taum Sauk reservoir is on schedule and near completion.

The reservoir, part of a power generation plant on Proffit Mountain in southeast Missouri, breached on Dec. 14, 2005, sending more than 1 billion gallons of water into nearby Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park and the Black River. The park superintendent, his wife and their three children, were swept out of their home but survived.

Ameren agreed to a $180 million settlement with the state.

Ameren said Thursday that the first water was pumped into the rebuilt dam on Feb. 27. The company says it will soon seek government approval to restore the plant to service.

The company expects to have the plant operational by summer.
