PrintCOLUMBIA — The board of directors for the Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts has decided to postpone its Hot Summer Nights annual concert series for 2010.
The concert usually runs for about eight weeks during the summer. Last year, it hosted 21 concerts with a budget of $400,000.
Unfortunately, a combination of the slumping economy, accrued debt from renovations and the festival’s failure to turn a profit in previous years has led the board to decide to postpone it.
The theater, built in 1928, underwent restorations which were completed in May 2008. The total cost was about $10 million and MTCA is still in debt about $2.7 million.
At 6:30 p.m. on April 14, a town hall meeting for the public is to be held at the theater and the board of directors might further discuss the future schedule.
Public Relations and Marketing Director Kanani May said the Hot Summer Nights festival is only being postponed, not canceled.
“We’re no different than many, many other symphonies across the country who are feeling the crunch from the economy,” May said.
She said MTCA hopes to bring the festival back in 2011.
