COLUMBIA — Columbia police investigating a report of a dog fight Sunday have arrested Juan C. Laboy in connection with the incident.
Officers were called to 4500 Wren Wood Drive and forced entry into the backyard, said police spokeswoman Jessica Haden.
In the yard, the officers rescued a male pit bull that was whimpering and whining, Haden said. The dog had injuries to its muzzle, left front leg and ears.
Another dog was located inside the house with injuries to its muzzle. Both animals were taken into protective custody, she said.
Witnesses told police a third dog that reportedly sustained substantial injuries was removed in a black Ford Explorer before officers arrived.
Blood and tissue were discovered in the yard, but officers saw no further evidence of dog fighting. Haden said officers found marijuana and a marijuana pipe inside the house.
Laboy was arrested and charged with animal abuse, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $1,500.
