LETTER: Kespohl's attacks detract from real issues

COLUMBIA — I find Gary Kespohl's attack on Karl Skala's travel expenses a typical inappropriate campaign effort to divert voters' attention from the real issues. Mr. Skala has worked for the long term growth of Columbia, and traveled to learn how other cities have accomplished long-term goals. We are facing many challenges right now, and we need honest discussion about how to meet them. The debate, and campaign coverage, should be about the real issues. Karl will stay focused on the important decisions ahead of us and work hard to keep our city moving in the right direction.

I agree with Mr. Parker wholeheartedly. I find the attack ads airing in the local media very distressing. I'm not sure I realized how much I appreciated Columbia's congenial political climate until it was disturbed by such destructive electoral tactics. I will listen to all the candidates' opinions and platforms. But style can overwhelm substance. If falling for such a denigrating style means poisoning the process, better to jettison the candidates who adopt such tactics, at least for now. Let them have a time-out to cool off!

I can understand your distress, but I'm wondering how you will survive the campaigning for the election in November 2010. Granted, we are then talking national rather than local government but the November election shows signs of being one of the nastiest in American political history.
There is no longer common ground in American national politics.
