PrintJEFFERSON CITY — Missouri House of Representatives members have given preliminary approval to a constitutional amendment that asserts the state's right to reject federal actions.
The measure says that Missouri will not enforce or recognize various federal policies. Those policies would cover subjects such as hate crimes, gun control and allowing civil unions or same sex marriage.
The constitutional amendment also seeks to reject federal health care policies establishing a public option or rationing care and seeks to block a "cap and trade" approach to reduce pollution blamed for global warming.
House members endorsed the measure 90-69 on Wednesday. It needs another vote before moving to the Senate. The amendment could appear on the ballot in November.

Wasn't that decided in the 1800's when the Civil War ended ? What are those guys THINKING ?
Perhaps those members and their constituents should just break away from the union?
If ths was remotely intellectually honest, it would be one thing. But they're just asserting the right to refuse selectively, and all the things they're wanting to reject just happen to fall outside the nexus of the evangelical Christian/Tea Party world view. It would be laughable if it wasn't so tragic.
One day we'll have moved on from the idea that human rights are subject to majority rule. Sad for all of us who know better to be stuck in the time before that.
I fully applaud (at least the appearance of) states asserting their ability to make decisons closer to home, and further away from the big dollar players that keep federal politicians on perpetual puppet strings.
I'm sure the same thing happens to a degree at the state (and maybe even local?) level, but at least the leash is a bit shorter when one relies on their closer neighors to make decisions, vs those who's ivory towers are hundreds (or often thousands) of miles away.
I hope our local and state legislators continue to realize who they really work for, it is not those people in Washington but their constituents back home. Let's make decisons right here that affect our closest neighbors first while allowing those in far away areas to do the same for THEMSELVES.. LOCAL control, I hope to see more and more states asserting their LEGAL rights to decide things for themselves and too more and more candidates swearing their allegiance to the Bill of Rights and Constitutional gaurantees of THe People instead of to some Partisan Elitist agenda or some false Hegelian left/right staged play for the masses.
