PrintCOLUMBIA — As of Friday, the Columbia response rate for the 2010 Census was 69 percent, compared to the national average of 64 percent.
Friday's response rate was 3 percentage points higher than Thursday's, when Mayor Darwin Hindman issued a news release urging residents to complete their forms.
"Frankly, that's not good enough," Hindman said Thursday. "The city's goal is 100 percent."
To establish living situations, census forms were to be received by April 1.
In the 2000 Census, 74 percent of Columbia residents responded compared to a national rate of 67 percent. More information about local census statistics can be found on the 2010 Census Web site.
Emmett Morris of the U.S. Census Bureau said workers will begin going door to door by May 1 in an effort to get information from those who failed to return their forms. While there is no "drop-dead date" to mail in the forms, Morris said the bureau encourages people to mail them in within the next couple of weeks.
The U.S. Census Bureau will deliver the numbers to the president by Dec. 31*. The Census Bureau has a second deadline in April 2011, when each state's information is given to the state government for redistricting purposes, Morris said.
