COLUMBIA — The Government Finance Officers Association, or GFOA, of the U.S. and Canada has awarded Columbia the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for 2010.
City Finance Director Lori Fleming said Columbia has been a recipient of the award for the last 10 to 12 years.
Criteria for the award assess the proficiency of how effectively the budget serves the city. It must serve as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, a communications device and meet standards in 14 other categories.
Guidelines for the function of the city budget are set by the GFOA and are recommended practices set by the organization.
Cities do not compete for the award. If all criteria are met, any city can be a recipient.
