COLUMBIA — The East Campus Neighborhood Association wants to rename a city park in honor of former Mayor Clyde Wilson.
The neighborhood association also agreed on Tuesday to begin raising money and to work with the city and property owners to expand Rockhill Park.
Paul Wallace said two empty lots adjacent to the park near Taylor Street would make a perfect addition. Residents cross the land regularly to access trails in Rockhill Park, he said.
Acquiring the lots would provide an opportunity to rename the park to honor Wilson, Wallace said.
Wilson, a longtime East Campus resident who was active in the neighborhood association, died March 30.
Wallace proposed that East Campus residents raise money, approach the city for a financial contribution and ask for the landowner to donate the land in exchange for a tax write-off.
“Everybody thinks it’s part of the park,” Wallace said. “There are a number of us that would contribute to this. The only real option for everybody concerned is to get this to the city at the lowest cost.”
East Campus resident Robin Wallace said the park would be "a wonderful memorial for Clyde, not only in reserving it for the use of the city and the neighborhood, but in contributing to the kind of thing that Clyde would very much want to be remembered for."
The neighborhood association is still deciding how residents can donate to the cause.
