Boone County Sheriff's deputy to receive department's Life Saving Award

COLUMBIA — Deputy Joey Lahman will receive the Boone County Sheriff's Department Life Saving Award, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Department.

Lahman, 41, earned the award for preventing several pickup truck occupants from drowning after the vehicle slipped off an icy road into a flooded farm field in March.

Lahman was driving on Route V when he spotted the overturned Toyota Tundra near Silver Fork Creek. He then stopped and waded through the water to remove 17-year-old Mikayla McCarty and her 11-year-old brother, Eric, from the truck. With the help of Boone Country Fire Protection District firefighters, he also removed the children's father, Michael McCarty, 50, according to the news release.

Lahman is a 16-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Dwayne Carey will present the award at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Boone County Sheriff's Department, 2121 County Drive.
