Missouri State University faculty considers unionization

SPRINGFIELD — The Missouri State University Faculty Senate has voted to consider unionizing.

Mark Richter, a chemistry professor who chairs the Faculty Senate, says faculty believe the Springfield university's leadership does not respect the faculty.

Thursday's vote came after an April 9 decision by the board to give the administration power to reassign faculty members without their consent in certain situations. The faculty had opposed the move, but President Mike Nietzel supported it.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that the vote means the faculty will appoint a committee to explore unionization. Richter says that doesn't mean unionization will happen. He says it's just a vote to explore the option and send a message to the university board.
