School bus route changes possible after state cuts funds

COLUMBIA — Fewer and longer bus routes are a possibility for Columbia Public Schools this fall.

Spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said the district lost $120,000 when Gov. Jay Nixon announced his latest state budget cuts on Thursday to make up for lagging revenues. The Columbia district has lost a total of $150,000 in state funding for busing, she said.

The district budgeted $7.75 million for transportation in the next school year.

Baumstark on Friday said there was no plan yet to handle the cuts for busing, but “the only variables you have to work with are how far they are going and how many of them there are, so we’ll have to look at them and figure out what to do.”

The latest round of state cuts came in response to a decline in tax collections during April, according to a previous Missourian report.
