COLUMBIA — PedNet's and GetAbout Columbia's Bike, Walk and Wheel week kicks off Saturday. To celebrate, a number of events are planned around the city.
Saturday, May 1
"Young at Heart" Ride with Darwin Hindman
- a 13-mile trip around Columbia
- 11 a.m. at Flat Branch Park Playground
Family Ride to the Bike, Walk & Wheel Week Kick Off Celebration
- Family ride on the MKT trail to Flat Branch Park
- 12:30-3:30 p.m. at Forum Trailhead
Bike, Walk & Wheel Kick-Off Celebration
- Offering refreshments, a bike equipment expo and a bicycle polo exhibition match.
- 1-4 p.m. at Flat Branch Park
Sunday, May 2
Cycle Recycle
Get a free, refurbished bike
- Line vouchers given out at 9 a.m., and bikes will be given away at noon
- GetAbout Columbia Office is at 101 N. 7th St.
Wheelchair Roll
- Enjoy a "recreational roll" around Stephens Lake Park, followed by free wheelchair detailing and refreshments for participants.
- 3-5 p.m. at Island Shelter in Stephens Lake Park
Monday, May 3
- Confident City Cycling Class (May 3, 5 and 7)
- Geared to build bike confidence and to make you a better rider. Will go over bike safety, how to change a tire and crash avoidance techniques.
- Ages 14 and up

Urban Bicycle Ride
- Explore central Columbia neighborhoods on a 20-mile ride.

MKT Secret Access Trail Ride
- Go to shopping areas and neighborhoods via the MKT Trail. Find out ways to get to the MU campus.
- 20-mile ride
- 6:00 p.m. at the Flat Branch Park Gazebo, on the corner of 4th and Cherry streets
Thursday, May 6
Try Transit Free Day
- City buses are free all day
Bike Maintenance Workshop
- Learn about bike maintenance: how to replace an inner tube and how to make cable and brake adjustments
- 6:30-7:45 p.m. at Walt's Bicycle Fitness and Wilderness Co., 1217 Rogers St.
Friday, May 7
Walk to School Day

Breakfast Station Day
- Free breakfast at a number of locations around Columbia

Bike-In Cinema
- See the documentary Eco-School House. There will also be local musicians, food and a bike raffle.

Mayor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health Expo

Youzeum Starlight Bike Ramble
- Recreational bike ride through Columbia at dusk with the Mayor's Council
