PrintCOLUMBIA – Due to an injured arm and doctor's orders, former Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman won't join in the "Young at Heart" Ride, the first event of Bike, Walk & Wheel Week.
The ride will be the first Hindman will miss since he started the program in 2002. It will also be the first Bike, Walk & Wheel Week with Hindman as a former mayor.

"Naturally I'm disappointed, but I'm doing all right," Hindman said.
When Hindman contacted fellow bike enthusiast Judy Knudson in 2002 about trying to motivate people to get outside and enjoy the city, the event was not a week long. The first year, Hindman said, he asked the city to try to bike to work one day a week.
"That didn't go over well," Hindman said.
Knudson, who became a coordinator for the event, suggested making it a week long. That first year, there were 700 participants. This year, coordinators are expecting 6,000 participants, up 1,000 from last year.
This morning, coordinators assembled volunteers and business sponsors for an appreciation breakfast and to celebrate Hindman's 77th birthday at Shakespeare's.
"I wanted to get 77 bikes out front," said Janet Godon, the Bike, Walk & Wheel Week program coordinator.
