COLUMBIA — Maplewood Barn Community Theatre will receive $1,100 from the city to help cover costs associated with putting on performances.
The money will not go toward making repairs to the barn destroyed by fire on April 5.
“We’ve been good neighbors with the city for years,” Maplewood Board President Michael Scott said. “There has been tremendous support from Parks and Recreation, the Office of Cultural Affairs and the city about keeping the theater doing what it does out there.”
Scott said Marie Hunter, director of the Office of Cultural Affairs, contacted him and said she wanted to recommend to the Columbia City Council that it provide the theater with these extra funds.
As part of the agreement, the theater would have to include, on all advertising and literature, the city logo or a credit line saying that financial assistance has been provided by the Office of Cultural Affairs.
The funds would be put toward general operating expenses such as concessions, costumes, publicity and promotion and buying the royalties for plays.
The Maplewood Barn Community Theatre also will apply Tuesday for the annual arts funding for 2011 from the office.
“They’re lifesavers,” Scott said of the office. “They are one of our many blessings.”
