For the ninth straight year, Columbia is hosting its annual Bike, Walk & Wheel Week.
The first event took place in 2002 and was the vision of former Mayor Darwin Hindman. The event is a program of the city’s Pedestrian and Pedaling Network, PedNet.
According to PedNet’s website, Bike, Walk & Wheel Week “is a weeklong celebration of active transportation in Columbia. Everyone is encouraged to get out and bike, walk or wheel to their destinations around town.”
The first Bike, Walk & Wheel Week attracted 750 participants, but PedNet estimates nearly 6,000 people may join in this year.
The event runs from May 1-8 with multiple events planned each day throughout the week.
Will you participate in Columbia’s Bike, Walk & Wheel Week? If so, which events are you looking forward to?

I sure will. We bought a house here because of so many transportation options. After moving from Clarksville, Tennessee, four years ago, we found Columbia to be a town progressing toward a positive future with the Complete Streets plans. Our infrastructure continues to provide for a multitude of traveling options. Motor traffic is simply one component, and we focus exclusively on it, or on any other single mode, to our detriment.
