PrintCOLUMBIA — Cyclists looking to ride the MKT Trail to the Katy Trail for this Saturday's 20th anniversary party in Rocheport can expect a relatively smooth ride, despite unfinished work sites and flooding.
MKT bridges 12 and 13 are under repair, but the construction team has a backup plan.
- Repairs on bridges 12 and 13 will not be completed by the 20th anniversary in Rocheport on Saturday, but there will be temporary bridges for crossing.
Mike Griggs, parks services manager, said temporary low water construction bridges will allow visitors to safely cross. "But we recommend that people get off their bikes and walk across these construction bridges," he said.
Griggs also said rain in recent weeks flooded the work areas, delaying progress of bridge repairs.
The time frame for completion of the bridges under construction is unknown, he said. Updates can be found online at the GoColumbiaMo Parks blog.
The trail also recommends a detour, directing visitors to take Forum Boulevard to Vawter School Road to Scott Boulevard.
Rocheport Mayor John Zondca expects anywhere between 200 to 400 people to attend the Katy Trail celebration Saturday, headlined by keynote speaker Gov. Jay Nixon.
"There will probably be several big biking groups, including the group biking to Hindman Junction," he said.
Griggs expects repairs to other trail areas that were damaged by flooding to be completed by Thursday afternoon.
"We understand that May and June are the premiere dates for a trail the community values, and we want to keep it's use up," Griggs said.
