PrintCOLUMBIA — Soup, soap and salvation is what the Salvation Army is all about, Regional Coordinator Major K. Kendall Mathews said.
This week marks National Salvation Army Week, and several Columbia locations are hosting a variety of events to spread its message.
Walnut Family Thrift Store, 23 E. Walnut St.
- Donate a non-perishable food item and receive a 10 percent discount on your purchase
Parkade Family Thrift Store, 1304 Parkade Blvd.
- Silent auction
- 50 percent discount on red, yellow and blue clothing
- Donate soap and receive discounts on your purchases
- $2 hot dog, chips and soda combo
Harbor House, 602 N. Ann St.
- Open house including a tour and a cup of coffee
Salvation Army Corps office, 1108 W. Ash St.
- Entries in a coloring contest are on display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. The work was submitted by first- through third-graders at Grant, Parkade and West elementary schools.
The two thrift stores in town are doing something new this year and are holding a "red, yellow and blue" sale to attract more customers. Mathews said 83 cents of every dollar made by the store go toward emergency services the organization provides to the community.
In addition to their retail endeavors, they are also hosting an open house for the Harbor House, which provides shelter for homeless families and single men and women. Director of Development Cyndy Chapman said that most people only know about the Salvation Army stores, and the open house will help acquaint them with other services the charitable organization provides.
National Salvation Army Week continues through Sunday.
