JEFFERSON CITY — A 16-year-old male in custody of the Division of Youth Services jumped into the Missouri River from the Jefferson City Bridge Friday.
The juvenile, who was in shackles, attacked the driver of the vehicle and another staff member as he was being transported over the bridge, said Scott Rowson, communications director for Missouri Department of Social Services. The driver maintained control of the vehicle and brought it to a stop, as the juvenile unbuckled his seatbelt, climbed into the front seat and exited the vehicle. He then ran away as the two staff members pursued him and tried to restrain him on the bridge. The subject evaded them and jumped in the water, Rowson said.
Jefferson City police responded to the area at noon, said Captain Shoemaker of Jefferson City police.
The fire department, water patrol and highway patrol have been notified and are searching for the subject. As of 2 p.m. Friday, the subject has not been located , according to Shoemaker.
The incident caused lane closures on the bridge, which re-opened at about 1 p.m.
