Speculation continued to grow this week on whether Missouri would join the Big Ten. Last December, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney announced that the conference was looking to expand. Despite reports of offers from the conference, the Missouri athletics department denies any official offers.
Since then, outlets nationwide have debated whether or not the expansion would be a positive move. The Big Ten, which currently has 11 teams, could hold a lucrative championship football game if it added just one more team. Mizzou would also face football powerhouses such as Ohio State and the University of Michigan.
A move to the Big Ten could result in more money and exposure because of the conference's affiliations with the Big Ten Network and ESPN. The Big 12 has one of the least lucrative television contracts in the BCS. According to a previous Missourian article, the move could result in "a seven-figure per year revenue increase."
As far as competition goes, the Big Ten and Big 12 have split the four BCS bowl games in which they faced each other. Mizzou has played the Big Ten's University of Illinois 23 times since 1896 in the State Farm Arch Rivalry game. The Tigers have won 16 of the 23 times.
What are the pros and cons of Mizzou joining the Big Ten?
