Man convicted in 'Precious Doe' murder loses appeal of sentence

KANSAS CITY — A Missouri Court of Appeals panel has rejected an appeal from the man convicted of killing a girl once known as Precious Doe.

The appeals court ruled Tuesday that there was sufficient evidence to convict Harrell Johnson of first-degree murder in the 2001 death of 3-year-old Erica Green in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Star reports that Johnson contended in his appeal that Jackson County prosecutors did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he deliberated before killing Erica.

Prosecutors say Johnson kicked the girl several times and then did not seek medical help for her. After she died, he decapitated her and threw her body in the woods.

She was known in the Kansas City area as Precious Doe until she was identified in 2005.

Her mother, Michelle Johnson, is serving 25 years for second-degree murder.
