COLUMBIA — The parking lot of 2810 LeMone Industrial Blvd., an area earlier bustling with sounds of construction on the new IBM building, was silent Tuesday afternoon after an accident. Larry Embley Jr. died at 12:30 p.m. after falling from the construction site.
Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Weaver said the incident was treated as a medical emergency and responded with one truck and an ambulance.
The Columbia Police Department is not conducting an investigation, said Sgt. Barbara Buck. The police conduct a death investigation if someone dies at the scene, however Embley was transported at about 10:35 a.m. to University Hospital before dying. The police did not respond to the accident.
Little Dixie Construction Co. is the main contractor on the new building project.
“I was on the job Monday and everything was compliant with (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations,” said Dale Dickinson, safety director of Little Dixie Construction Co.
Dickinson has been working for Little Dixie for 15 years and said it has an exemplar safety program.
“It’s unfortunate. I don’t have any idea what happened,” Dickinson said.
William Alpert, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration compliance officer on the scene, said the administration was investigating the accident. Spokesman Jay Vicory, of OSHA in Kansas City, said completion of the investigation may take three to six months.

For safety sake I would personally like all work to stop until
the investigation is completed.
I'd hate to read about another on-site death if there's an unknown problem going on over there.
I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Larry Embley Jr.
